Tarot Tips x Tricks, Pt. 1
For those of you who do Tarot…
What got you into it?
What was your first deck?
What tips & tricks do you have for the aspiring beginner?
What systems or spreads do you like using the most?
I've had a few people express interest in learning the Tarot & were wondering how I got started & knowledgeable about it, so that's what I'll share today.
TL;DR: K.I.S.S
The Tarot is a divination system that has observable patterns. Once you see the pattern, it's easier to connect the dots.
You can start with whatever makes sense to you. I suggest starting with something that is motivating. Small wins help us achieve consistency & therefore, mastery.
Here are a few tips & ideas to help you get started:
Invest in a deck that you absolutely love the art - search "tarot" + your favorite stuff for inspo!
Pull cards often enough to get used to what they mean. Determine a realistic frequency. - work with the energy of your astrological 6th house for this
Start with 1-3 cards at a time.
Check in with yourself as well as with sources: look at the card first & use your intuition - what stands out? Then look at the guide book.
Bonus: share your readings with others when stuck, or if you just wanna bounce ideas!
What did NOT work for me, my ADHD, & my 6H of daily habits & routines ruled by Gemini:
Pulling a card a day - too much all at once.
Learning the Tarot in chronological order - learning common themes worked better.
Pulling from a deck whose art I didn't connect with - failed vibe check: boring!
My journey really took off when I found spreads (shout out to Ethony) that had no more than 4-5 cards that were pulled every Full & New Moon (2x a month). These themed spreads allowed me to get used to pulling as well as assess & review what was happening 2 weeks at a time each month. I was able to build consistency because I had a regularly scheduled time dedicated to learning the Tarot that was connected to something I was authentically invested in. When I started to see the connection between New & Full moons that were about 6 months apart, this became a practice that I decided to adopt for life.
At this point in my life, I pull Tarot routinely every start of the year, birthday, month, week, & lunar event. I also pull whenever I desire clarity around something as well as when I get a message from spirit that warrants a longer conversation through the nuanced extended language of the Tarot vs. playing 1000 yes/no questions with my pendulum.
Sharing these revelations with others & pulling as a community also helped me stay consistent. Eventually, sharing my interpretations with others & inadvertently teaching the Tarot led to my first professional Tarot gig, which was an unexpected invitation & gift from the universe. More on that at another time.
If you want some inspiration on some decks or are curious about which ones I use, feel free to check out this blog post. I'll eventually add my Tarot "interviewing" process (where I interview the Tarot deck itself to learn its energies) & my reviews & personal use of each.
